Re: Challenge of the month - Troubleshooting?

... I suspect the reason is a wish to help others and preserve as many of their beloved machines as possible. ... +1! In addition to that it is fun to learn about more failure points and it's symptoms. Again, supporting the motivation Boydie posted. Deliberate fault injection will likely not be a f...

Re: Fault finding index

BBC Master Compact, dual disc drives. *cat sets the drive spinning, led comes on but no catalogue is being read.
Speaker gives occasional static noise.

Solution: the DC socket was somewhat corroded. Cleaned socket, sorted.

Re: First ever BBC broken

To check for the various clock signals you can see if you can find 1, 2, 4 and 8 MHz on pins 4, 5, 6, and 7 of IC6 (video processor), as suggested by the service manual. If your logic probe can detect a pulse, that is. An alternative link to the trouble shooting guide is here: http://primrosebank.ne...

Re: First ever BBC broken

Does it boot without the System VIA (IC3)?

Do you have an eprom programmer? Then Tricky's test rom can help diagnosing.

Have you tried the suggestions in the fault finding index?

Re: long beep and nothing else

This site may be helpful: http://8bs.com/inbbc.htm The system VIA is the chip marked 6522, just north of the socket that fits the keyboard flat cable to the main board. To get to the user VIA (which you can use as a temporary replacement) you need to remove the keyboard. It is the bottom / south mos...

Re: long beep and nothing else

A quick way to check if the system VIA (IC3) is the culprit (likely) you can simply remove IC3 and switch on. It should then start up normally but with continuous beep and no keyboard function. Then, before removing the PCB and reflowing solder joints you can - try swapping the 6522's (as Mark sugge...

Could it be that the system VIA does not get reset on power-on so that some of the configuration is messed up?

Re: Troubleshooting my latest BBC B

I had a BBC B+ with a faulty capacitor in the system VIA reset circuit. It may be worth checking C10.

BTW; is the reset pin really 5V or something a bit lower?

Re: Troubleshooting my latest BBC B

Welcome to Stardot, Tore! :D The symptoms you describe very much suggest an issue with the system VIA; the 6522 just north of the keyboard socket on the main board. Since you already tried swapping the 6522 (also tried the known good from the working beeb?), you could have a look for issues with the...

Re: Which gadgets and computers do you remember from school?

I had to work with the Aster CT-80 in school. These were bought in large quantities by the Dutch government for computer education. They were TRS-80 clones on nitro: better and faster. To me, having a BBC micro and Sinclair spectrum at home, they were just very boring machines. The only other electr...

Some spare power plugs for the Atom, since they seem relatively hard to find I thought I'd get a few along with some other bits (never know if/when they run out of stock).

Do you have a linux install on a computer with an IDE interface? Then you can use dd to image the disk and then access the image. See this thread.

In addition to that you can measure that pin 5 of the CMOS chip connects to IC13 pin 44 and pin 6 connects to IC13 pin 45. Those are the two data lines Steve refers to.

Re: A3000 restoration

That's bad news :( Have you checked that the CMOS chip is getting power when the A3000 is switched on? And are you sure the DEL key works perfectly? 2 x yes and judging from the first photo you posted I'd say a failed CMOS chip is likely. It is a through-hole chip. For instructions how to remove thi...

Thanks Roland, I managed to create a 40T disc with the programs. I could not find load and execution addresses. I put them on &2900 (does that seem right?).
On execution all programs terminate with "error 2". So clearly I am still missing something.. #-o

Acorn Disc Pack Utility Programs

My Disc Pack seems to work perfectly but came without any floppies. I could use a 40T BBC DFS formatted floppy but would like to try and format and verify a floppy from the Atom.

Does anyone have an image of the Utility Programs disc (Format, Compact, Infall and Verify)?

The first priority is to get the battery out and clean the pcb if it has leaked (which, regrettably, is usually the case).
