Same with me. The physical write protect negates the use of the soft lock so I never used it.

Re: Problem Beeb MotherBoard

The principle behind finding bad ram from software is that you have bootable BBC with partly bad ram. So either the lower RAM is good enough to start her up or you create a small logic circuit to swap lower and higher RAM and use that to create a bootable computer. You can then look for the faulty c...

Looks promising. What do you see if you enter a *cat or *. command after pressing F12?

... However there is another problem which is that the number of IDEFSdiscs is showing as zero after *status, but you set it to one earlier. does your machine have a new battery in it ? Or perhaps a <ctrl><break> instead of a <shift><break> after entering the config commands?

Try all the configuration commands from the userguide as quoted in my earlier post. Notably the IDEFSDelay is now set to 0 on your machine.

Re: Another A5000 restoration....

After checking all the tracks it is time to move attention to the logic ICs. I'd start with replacing IC49 as that is closest to the battery, but if you need to order parts you might as well get two 74HCT245s and a 7406 to replace IC37 and IC42 if needed. You could also remove IC38 temporarily if yo...

Do you have another CRT next to the one you are using that could cause interference? Or other magnetic devices (e.g. speakers)?

I just checked on a BBC with DFS. If the Turbo MMC ROM is fitted and no MMC hardware attached to the user port, the *CARD command always gives a Card? error, regardless of the ROM position. With the user VIA fitted it seems to have a slight delay, with the user VIA removed the Card? error is almost ...

Regrettably I won't have time to check expected behaviour on a BBC before Thursday. You could check for dry joints on the user via. @duikkie: if there is nothing attached to the user port should smart spi return a "Card?" error if you type *card? Or will the command be passed on to the DFS...

Re: A5000 IDE interface just died... what to try next?

You say looks fine, but have you checked continuity from each ide pin back to the controller? No, as I don't know what I'd be looking for. You'd be looking for non-conducting (broken) tracks using a multimeter. You may find this post useful as a guide: http://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1...
