Re: High Score Challenge S8 - R5 - Cosmic Camouflage

Just played this a few times in 2001 noting 1 score of 1390 and only the year. I guess I couldn't be bothered to write the exact date for that 'token' score. Now tried it a bit more. The cloak works well, you know from shooting where you are (same as with fortress and the force fields). I got to 516...

Planetoid: 941,950

I almost wanted to quit as I lost 1st at an OK score, but the next 2 lives quickly after that. Continued anyway and I got into a rhythm, I experimented as I did a while ago with letting landers at higher waves pick up men too. Got to the highest no. of lives smart bombs ever by a large margin 36l / ...

Re: High score challenge rules discussion.

Point pressing / farming / whoring has always been banned. Point-pressing, from what I saw in videos, is maximising your score, not farming. In e.g. a video I watched of Donkey Kong. There is a limit to the extra points per level you can attain there, so it's not farming. Similarly you might call c...

Re: "Unfixable bug" in BBC B Elite

Acorn didn't use anything but the 8271 anyway until the B+ (and that still was only in single density) They offered a 1770 board for the Model B. The copyright date on its installation instructions is 1985, so it's not clear if it came before or after the B+'s launch. Also, there was the Electron P...

Re: "Unfixable bug" in BBC B Elite

I stumbled across this video by David B, a postmortem of Elite. http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1014628/Classic-Game-Postmortem It's worth a watch Lots of classic Braben fabrication there, I'm afraid. There are other comments to be made on earlier stuff in the talk, such as that he doesn't make clear ...

Re: "Unfixable bug" in BBC B Elite

Thanks for all the welcomes. That postmortem video conicides with my scanner recollection far better than Edward Rothman's acccount, although I recall coding the scanner while David produced the ellipse bitmap. I watched it and it does not eliminate the possibility of someone else's input for an id...

The highest possible score in Planetoid

Back in the day, one of my school friends discovered the hard way that the score wraps at a million... That's easy to see just by disassembling... I think a score of a bit more than 1M, perhaps 1.2M, is about the maximum possible. The game gets faster and faster in case of the landers and mutants w...

Patch for Planetoid

So I made a patch which fixes some graphical bugs and adds pause/continue if you want it, and it adds escape. I guess pause/escape are a non desirable change for high score competitions and it's of limited value anyway (using it at high scores doesn't work as you slow down quite a bit in responses w...

Re: High Score Challenge S8 - R4 - Caveman Capers

@Wouter, I found the same thing at first and then I realized there is a 'rhythm' to this game. It takes a while to find it, it's not just about pixel perfect because I've proven that with left and right movement you change how perfect the pixel jump has to be. I didn't like this game at first but a...

Re: High Score Challenge S8 - R4 - Caveman Capers

I also can't get myself to play this game after briefly trying it twice. I find the pixel perfect jumping after the part with the birds really annoying. A week or so ago when I tried it first I realised that you can move left/right even in the air when jumping but it seems the start of the jump need...

Just to have a look I played Fortress again a bit. In 1996 I only played it a few times as I noted just 1 score on 1 day then, and got to 79250. This time on the first day that I tried, I got to that exact same score... Then the next day to 81350. I get through the first 2 rounds without loss of lif...

Re: What is the average age on here??

It always felt that the natural time to have encountered BBCs and become used to programming them was at school in 1982-1985 or so, which would result in you being 45-50 now. Oh, everyone feels that the way they did it is the only natural way. No, what Jonathan writes is correct (correctly reasoned...

Planetoid: 873,600

Same night as the 812k score I did better, 857300 so really close to my 1996 high score of 888150, and I feel sure I can wipe out that old high score. I had no more time as preparing for a trip and I will be away for 4-6 weeks. I made a page about Planetoid with comparisons with Guardian, Williams ...

I fully get your point. Also people need to be logged in to respond. If you don't have a second processor, it's very unlikely that someone will log in just to hit the "I don't have one" button. These people will not show up in all the forum figures. And there still appear to be people who...

Re: High score challenge rules discussion.

No, I don't agree at all with any restrictions on how I can play a game, unless it makes the game pointless. Toppling Kong multiple times is not unfair, it has nothing to do with the concept of fairness or unfairness. It is simply a tradeoff of lives for points which is how all games work anyway. An...

If you planned to make a game for a second-processor equipped machine, you might be interested in how many people are an in a position to appreciate it. For some purposes, the proportion matters, and for others, the absolute number. For other purposes, it's all just a bit of fun. I meant (I thought...

I doubt you will get a true proportion of people having/not having a 2p. Logically people who don't have one don't want to bother doing effort for what they don't have, and those who do have one will have a desire to 'show off' what they have (don't deny it, it's true!)... But in the real world, AL...

In Rocket Raid, you do your best, if you die then you may end up with a better score. At times I did but my effort was always to get to the next level in the game. Overall, in Manic Miner it does make a difference. I blew Matt's score out of the water by doing that and then realized what I was doin...
