Re: Legacy of the BBC Micro User magazine / Database Publications Ltd

I'd love to know if the mailbags (letters, hints, maps etc) from the Mad Hatter and Alice adventuring columns have been archived somewhere.
I suspect though that they had a clearout at some point, especially when they moved offices.

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

I've now got 12 spells on It's Magic and I think I've just about completed this part of the game. And the only puzzle I haven't done yet ? Yep, you guessed it, the library ! After reading the review of this game in the Micro User it would appear I need Diane's help but she's not being very cooperati...

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

The pen being unreliable certainly sounds like a clue but I managed to fill in the form ok, when I try again it says "Why bother doing that again".
Maybe the pen has another use later on in the game but snaps or runs out when you try to use it.

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

It's Magic is once again driving me absolutely nuts ! If anyone is playing it / has played it and can help with the library I'd very much appreciate it. If someone has a spare 10 minutes I can get you to the library quickly so you can have a go yourself. From the start of part 1: NW, W, SW, S, S, SE...

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

After a week's holiday I've had another crack at It's Magic today and I think I've solved the problem of the spell not being learnt. I solved one puzzle and learnt the intricacies of the spell then later on I solved another puzzle and learnt how to cast the spell, so for some spells you have to do t...

Re: BBC Elite Which is the best version? Or do they differ?

I'm thinking about playing either the Master or 2nd Processor version, I'm not sure which is better so I'll probably play both for a while and decide. Does anyone know if they offer more missions ? From memory I think the Electron and BBC tape versions have none, the BBC disk version has two, but wh...

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

Hi Lurkio, thanks for your efforts but exactly the same problem occurs with this version. Maybe it's meant to be this way and I'll find a way of unlocking the spell a bit further into the game. I've encountered what appears to be another bug in the library, maybe I'm just frustrated at the slow prog...

What about an Electron version ? Is that available anywhere? I must admit I don't have an Electron emulator so I'd have to hope it works on Beebem.

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

It's Magic is doing my head in. You're supposed to learn spells by reading plaques but some of them don't any spells on.

I've also had a case where I've been told I've learnt a spell but it doesn't appear in my Status.

Not sure if the game is bugged or not. Anyone else playing ?

Re: Beebem screen reader text view

It's Magic by Central Computing is the game I'm playing at the moment. The reason is I somehow managed to get a FIREBALL spell while I was wandering aimlessly around trying everything and I haven't been able to work out how I got it. If I had a transcript I could replay the game until I found out wh...

Beebem screen reader text view

In Beebem / View / Screen Reader Text View I can see the text on the BBC screen and can copy and paste this into Notepad or Word. How do I get a scrolled amount of text displayed ? For example, if I'm playing a text adventure and I want to record my progress how do I access a long continuous stream ...

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

Adventure Quest is probably the smallest of the three, and on a par with Colossal in terms of difficulty. Could be a good one to start on. Dungeon Adventure is a beast, by far the biggest of the lot in my recollection. You'll need to be on top of your game to finish that one. Lords of Time is fun be...

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

You could do worse than start with the game where it all began, Colossal Adventure by Level 9. This was the first text adventure I played as a kid and I remember discussing it with my mates in the classroom at school as we raced each other to be the first to solve it. My second choice would be Lords...

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

I've just partly answered my own question. After scouring my collection of BBC Micro User's I've found a review of It's Magic in the May 1990 issue
(page 49) which includes some tips about how to use spells. The review was by none other than Barbara Gibb, once of this parish I believe.

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

Does anyone have any game documentation for "It's Magic" ? I'm trying to learn how to cast spells and 'm hoping the documentation will help
with this and other aspects of the gameplay.

If you type WORDS there's a list of game commands but they're no use for spells.

Re: Unfinished Text Adventures

Thanks for the suggestions, iamaran, I chose It's Magic by Central Computing and have had a go at it this afternoon. It's written in a similar style visually to Level 9 and Magus so I'm liking it already. I've solved a couple of puzzles and have realised that you have to cast spells in the game. Aft...

I've just uploaded the solution to Cube of Zoth to CASA although I didn't find the missing 10 points. Perhaps someone could have a go and find it ?

I've just finished the west level on Cube of Zoth. I got stuck for a while in a prison cell (locked door obviously) with only a cup of tea

I'll have the last section done and dusted and uploaded to CASA by Sunday night !

Retro Gamer Adventure Reviews

I've just read an article in the latest edition of Retro Gamer (173) about Shaun Abbott and how he had his design for an adventure game accepted by Level 9 and released as Emerald Isle. It's a decent four page article on Shaun and his game, though unfortunately Shaun's memory of the details of the w...

Great game this Cube of Zoth. You have to play several mini-adventures separately from each other which begged the question, what if I need an object from one to complete another ? I've just finished the northern "Pacific" adventure and you get dumped back at the start minus your collectio...

Started on Cube of Zoth and am pleasantly surprised. It's an Adventurescape game with a nice looking multi-coloured screen and also uses disc access, presumably to cram in lots of locations, puzzles and objects so I have high hopes for this one.
