Re: Floppy drive ready line.....

I've always understood FDD READY to simply mean that correct power is present, a disc is inserted and that the spindle is up to speed - typically with a threshold of around 90% of full speed. Thus, I wouldn't expect stepping to affect it. Some drives do have jumpers to configure the conditions for R...

Re: Recurrent corrupted discs - possible floppy drive fault?

One of the advantages of using UPURS for DFS disc writing (doesn't do ADFS [-X ) is that all the writing is done on the Beeb (or Elk or Master) and you therefore never get strange incompatibility issues with drives and discs.

Re: Plus1 Cart slot enables?

On my Fisher Price EUP, the on-board rom/ram slot is configured to accept a 16k or a 32k chip and in the case of the latter, ROMQA is simply connected directly to A14 of the device to give two 16k roms.

Maybe there’s nothing wrong with that line and it’s just doing what it’s supposed to in trapping errors except that ERL is, for some reason, being set to 40 or 320 even though there’s an error elsewhere? Daniel - I can’t access anything Beeb just now, if you type the line into Beebem as line 10 and ...

Heh - it was just one of a few ditties that I submitted to TMU and one that they liked enough to publish so “ Survive! ”, a simple but fun Mode 7 Tron-type game written in hybrid BASIC and assembler. Nothing compared to your efforts though Paul (plus Lee et al) and you certainly made my day - if one...

Ha! I'm not much of a gamer myself but have kept an admiring watching brief on this project and of course, the grandkids love it! 8) Anyway, just on a random whim, this evening I typed my name into the search box and lo!, my one claim to fame (albeit a mere shadow of the bulk on offer) appeared! It would still be worth trying my ditty in all the modes - due to its being predicated on display symmetry, it’s often a quick way to at least first determine whether the the fault is random or consistent in nature. Jus’ sayin’...... 8)

My program won’t point you at a given ram chip - for that, use this short program... 5 MODE 0 10 ?&4000=0 20 A=?&4000 30 IF A=0 THEN GOTO 20 40 PRINT ~A ...which is a very slightly modified version of a test originally suggested by Mark H. If you get a hex number output then any bits ‘set’ i...

Re: Random pixels on BBC Model B

From many years ago, here’s a copy of a post of mine related to faults with screen corruptions which might add some value to your investigations. If a given mode ‘passes’ but you see visual corruption then that points at the display circuitry whereas if a given mode test reports a fail, then that su...

Could you find and post the drive mechanism model number on a label on the back of the drives? They're probably FD-1057 or similar but knowing might help us to validate the jumper settings.

Paul - on my IOS 11 iPad Air, when I look at your ‘snow’ picture as it appears in the thread, it is indeed upside down. However, if I tap (viz ‘click’) on it to see the full-size image, it is then the right way up! This is true for Safari, Chrome or Puffin. That doesn’t sound as simple as having one...

Good work! =D> I have a manual switch on my 5.25” drive whilst the 3.5” auto-switches depending on whether I insert a HD or DD disc and I can therefore have any combination of DD/HD media in the two drives. Re: EEPROM - the Holy Grail of Sideways Rom?

Yes, I originally looked at the 29C256 and although it is slightly more pin-assignment compatible in relation to ‘ normal ’ Beeb-familiar memory devices, in the end I favoured the 28C256 because (I think) at least at that time four years ago, it was harder to source non-dubious examples of the forme...

Re: loading UEF images into the Elk with UPCFS on EUP

Star commands should work for Jungle Journey and Castle Raider. For other ROMs used with the MGC, you just copy them into SRAM or page them in and do a CALL !-4 instruction from BASIC. It should at least be possible to experiment with 16K games for those without separate SRAM. :) Ok, thanks David, ...

Re: EEPROM - the Holy Grail of Sideways Rom?

Ok Ken, had a quick look and I can straight away see that the corruption problem is basically because I do a device-type test for LOCK and UNLOCK to check that the user isn't wasting their time with an unsuitable device or configuration thereof but what I don't do is restore the $FF EOR'd first byte...

I haven’t got the source with me at the mo (just a matter of a netbook rather than an iPad) but yes, I do perform a write test although I didn’t realise I was leaving a ‘corruption’ in place unless I got sidetracked by the need for a physical write-protect switch and never properly reviewed that pro...

Re: EEPROM - the Holy Grail of Sideways Rom?

Short answer is no. I wasn't aware of that switch. I'll try that this evening and report back. Its generally not as critical on a Beeb, it tends to depend on what's already in the eeprom prior to any change. If the eeprom is already empty or full of garbage then the OFF command likely won't make an...

Re: EEPROM - the Holy Grail of Sideways Rom?

As a sanity check (and although this one’s maybe a pain ), could you first revert to a ‘normal’ Beeb again without the IntegraB and configure one of your 28C256’s in the originally prescribed manner? That would at least vindicate the eeprom chips (or otherwise) without you having to try a diff...
