Re: How do Beebs break in transit?

It always amuses me when they have the annual story on the news "Christmas post rush...sorting offices working flat out..." blah blah, coupled with the inevitable footage of inside a sorting office where they are actually lobbing parcels about all over the shop. I'm surprised they actually...

Winchester Host Adapter Fred Memory Mapping

Back to an old recurring theme of mine, connecting up real 1980s Winchester Disc units to a Beeb at the same time as a more modern flash based storage device to do a backup. The problem is that you can't have the original ADFS active at the same time as "IDE" ADFS, so doing something invol...

Re: ABug NORTH User Group meeting | 19-21 JAN 2018 | MANCHESTER *BOOKING INFO*

At the moment then I'm thinking of: Station 129 (BBC B issue 2 with DNFS), 5.25" floppy drive, TV set Station 114 (Master Turbo with Econet), 5.25" floppy drive, TV set, Winchester host adapter rig up, SCSI2SD, maybe another Winchester unit Could bring third spare TV set at a pinch if need...

Not me! I've sworn off repairs for 2018 (although not breaking things, that wouldn't be any fun) but somebody else can if they like.

Re: ABug NORTH User Group meeting | 19-21 JAN 2018 | MANCHESTER *BOOKING INFO*

I'll bring my name-badge, quite a few of us should have them from previous events. Apart from that, any requests? I haven't fixed what I am bringing yet, but I thought I would bring my Issue 2 Econet Model B, probably the oldest working Beeb with Econet! I might bring my Winchester rig-up as I'm in ...

CPU International Crisis - Are We All Doomed?

What's all this about then?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-42562303

Are we all doomed?

I expect my Beebs are safe, but what about the RISC PC and Raspberry Pi ?

Has everyone on here signed the non-disclosure agreement to hush it up, or can we talk about it??

Re: Dolphin Columns

Sounds like it will be beyond me, and rightly so. The sad thing is that Dolphin had accessed and modified date columns and then they disappeared a few Ubunti back to be replaced with the meaningless "date" column - I still don't know whether that's accessed, modified, created, stamped, rea...

Re: Dolphin Columns

I think I'd sort of worked out that some downloading of patched code and re-compiling or whatever would be necessary, but I haven't a clue how to go about that. My install of Ubuntu 17.04 has Dolphin 16.12 and I can't for the life of me work out how I can install a later version without breaking eve...

Re: BBC micro style keycaps for modern keyboard

This very same question - ie. what font was used on the BBC micro keytops - occurred to me only a few days ago when I was making up the picture set of my visit to CCH in September. Looking at the collection they have there, multiple 1980s machines used exactly the same font.

Re: An odd collection

That's a full date set of florins still in circulation at the time they were demonetised in 1992. When I was collecting them in 1992 the most difficult year to find was 1958, I really struggled to get hold of those. Shillings from 1937 to 1967 had English and Scottish varieties, I really wish I had ...

Well, anyway, I found some code work on github or somewhere the other day which had added support for modification time and even creation time to Dolphin, which still seems to be a thing pretty alien to Linux. I couldn't find out how to install these update patches or compile them or whatever I need...

Re: Building a BBC

There's no BASIC in there. That won't stop a BBC B working, but it will limit what you can do in terms of testing blind if the video isn't working (like typing in a SOUND command to make a noise, or even just pressing COPY). IC6 is the early VC2023 ULA so the bodge on the solder side of the board is...

Re: Master ADFS problems

Is it possible you have a single-sided disc drive? An 80-track Master 128 Welcome disc has all the data on the "second" side of the disc which can't be read by a single sided drive. The 40-track version uses the "first" side. It's the same disc, but there is a utility on the disc...

No, that object didn't exist previously but it creates the directory during the run as you say. Then there is a 33 byte file inside with the name of the first sprite. So it can get as far as creating and writing to that file but then something must go wrong. Not sure what to do next, I did copy &...

XNView

I just downloaded XNView on Ubuntu, although I understand that there may also be a version for another current operating system that a few people are using. I installed it because I wanted to be able to view Acorn Sprite files (ie. from !Paint or *SCREENSAVE etc) on PC without having to convert them...
