Re: Desoldering components

All this messing around with defunct ICs has led me to think I need something better for desoldering components. I'm currently using my soldering iron and an unheated solder sucker, which is usually just about adequate but sometimes tends to struggle (solder solidifies in the time between removing ...

It wasn't so much hardware than made a sound, rather it was a professional midi sequencer... Responsible in part for many 80's number 1's ;)

In the short term, if it is the X2 suppression caps, you can simply remove them and it'll still work as these caps are used for noise suppression only.

Re: Some question about my A3010. Adelaide & IDEtoCF

Nice looking machine. You should be able to switch out the HDD with an IDE -> SD or IDE -> CF card without issue. The Adelaide board machines are better in some respects in that it's possible with some work and nerves of steel to add an ARM3 processor to the board like this http://www.retro-kit.co.u...

Wow!

On some levels, seeing a Beeb do that is all kinds of wrong! It's utterly astounding too. Speechless. Can't wait to drag the Master out of storage and fit all my upgrades to it including the VideoNuLA :D

Awesome work!

Re: Data Harvest 'Contact Controller Plus', Software & Documentation Required

Pretty sure that this was the serial port PC version which was significantly updated from the user/parallel port BBC Micro version so I doubt there's any software for the Beeb for this one.

EDIT: Just read the rest of your posts. It looks like you're coming to the same conclusion.

Re: A3000 restoration

You can use all the standard TV modes with the BenQ, but not sure if it'll cope with the A3000's pseudo - VGA. A vidc enhancer will give you proper VGA frequencies. d. I've only got an A3000 out at the moment and it's got a VIDC Enhancer with just a 25.175MHz clock on board as opposed to the tradit...

That looks really cool and simple for most machines....

I have a slightly unrelated question... Is that A5000 an Alpha with a fifth column ROM??? If so, what's in the ROM?

You can kind of tell if the cellophane shrink wrap is original or not because it actually gets scratched and damaged over the years and goes dull. But that depends on how it's been stored and whether it's been handled much in the meantime. Outside of that, the only thing cellophane is good for is th...

Re: Bit of a project.. Part 1: How to go about 32bitting my 26 bit 4th..

Use !ARMalyser https://armclub.org.uk/free/ I used that to help convert the Assembly code that was written inline in the original VIDC Enhancer source. That way, rather than blowing up when attempting to run it on a 32-bit machine, it fails gracefully with a proper error. Even though the Enhancer ta...

My refurbished A3000 died a couple of days ago. After 6 hours up time, I went to reboot the machine and it failed to come back. Re: Which A3010 Monitor?

Benq monitors are 5:4 ratio but most can display TV modes as well as VGA modes if you tell RISC OS 3 that you're using a multisync monitor. I have a Benq 912 hooked up to my A3000 with a VIDC Enhancer to bring the display capabilities up to those of the A3010.

I've ranted about this sort of thing before. For me, repairing a device to working order supersedes keeping it "original" unless there is something exceedingly special about the "original". For instance it's serial number is 0000001 and the damage to the perceived value would be ...

It's interesting to read all the different replies on this. It seems that the general consensus is that there's no real overarching definition, it's more of a subjective item by item, use type thing. I'm happy with my initial definition of retro in that respect for me. I was just interested if other...
