Re: LCDGameModes released for RISC OS 3.1 computers!

Great stuff Steve, I will break out my games collection and test over this week. Going to try it with some ARM250 machines first.

Re: A3000 Battery Damage Repairs

OK, thanks Tom, I'll do some more testing. Its encouraging to think that MEMC isn't necessarily trashed. This machine worked perfectly up until the point when it suddenly failed for no apparent reason other than a slightly crusty battery. I'll check all the address and data lines around the ROM soc...

A new seller for this thread I think, offering a knackered (battery damaged) A3000 for £300 BIN! I've got 3 A3000s with Ultra Rare Internal Hard Drives here, if his sells then it's time to flog 'em! Actually, he says "We are also currently in the process of trying to aquire a working A3000 to ...

Re: 20 year old A3000, Zip, C compiler.

Have you checked the machine for battery damage? The A3000 is prone to some quite severe damage from leakage, so it's probably best to replace it before it gets any worse.

Someone must have really wanted it, it went for £210! Well, it was in quite good nick, and doesn't come by much ... I noticed it was being sold by a forum member, so apologies for any offence! The price of stuff sold on auction does sometimes amaze me. I don't know much about pricing of 8 bit perip...

Re: Best way to backup RISC pc hd

I've got some of the CF/SD cards from APDL and I'm having endless problems getting them to work, although I'm trying to get them to run with 3.11 class machines. They'll probably be more compatible with a RiscPC though, just relating my experience. I have found the SparQ drives they sell quite usefu...

Re: Resurrecting an A5000

I've had a chance to come back to the first machine, and I think I've found the problem. It wasn't recognising the floppy and any hard drives weren't reading properly either. Upon closer inspection, R282 between one of the floppy and IDE connectors appears to have overheated at some point. There was...

Re: A3000 - ropey mouse, RF output issue

Don't know if this will fit the PCB, but it looks like it has the same pin configuration, worth checking out. Mark Ah that looks slightly more in my budget  I might get a battery at the same time. If it fits, let us know - one of my A3000s has a slightly damaged mouse port (the port works, th...

Re: A3000 - ropey mouse, RF output issue

The underside of the board is in much better nick and barely looks bothered by the battery leakage. Annoyingly the pad I managed to total was the one nearest the front, could I solder a wire to the next point on the track, which appears to be a little resistor thing just below it (to front of compu...

If you visit the link below and check out all the maintenance links on the right, all the procedures were carried out to the newly supplied A3000 from APDL which had claimed to be refurbished. Re: A3000 - ropey mouse, RF output issue

How is the underside of the board where the battery connections are? You don't really need to solder the positive leads into both holes. If the solder pad underneath the board on the hole that's nearest the front of the computer is undamaged, just solder the fly lead on that. Just a question - are y...

Re: A3000 Connection!

Back in the day, when I had my original A3000, I hooked it up to a Cub monitor by poking wires directly into the connectors at the back of the A3000 and the the appropriate holes in the Cub's DIN socket (thanks, Acorn User!). My parents wouldn't trust me with a soldering iron.

Unfortunately yes, someone has blacked up the cartridge slots and speaker grill. The cartridge slots I can sort of understand, but why the speaker grill?!?! If I can get it working, I'll get out the model paints and see if I can whip up a batch of Acorn beige. The white stuff on the 0 key is a bit o...

Re: A3000 Battery Damage Repairs

Well, we have progress, sort of. Soldered in a new ROM socket, and also replaced L13 and L14 (which had also surreptitiously broken). No longer getting a ROM checksum error, which is good, and the machine now always gets to the red screen in the POST sequence - before, it would sometimes get there, ...

My poor Master

Got it in a job lot of various Acorn related bits. As you can see, it's feeling rather sorry for itself - not in good condition and currently completely dead. I always wanted a Master (wasn't so keen on the Compact though). Not sure if I will have enough room to keep it, but for now, the next projec...

Re: A3000 - ropey mouse, RF output issue

I'm no expert but I fixed a machine with a dodgy mouse socket recently. Most of the tracks relating to the mouse are underneath the board, so are somewhat protected from battery leakage damage. All I did to fix mine was briefly touch the soldering iron to the pins to melt and reform the solder.

VNo joy :( but because of the output to the monitor, Mark diagnosed a faulty Video ULA in 0.5 seconds. After 0.75 seconds, he had poked it with his magic finger, and BANG! Having taken a closer look at machine 3, the fault code being reported was "ROM failed checksum error". Removing the RISC OS roms revealed badly corroded contacts, one of which had broken off in the socket for ROM 4. Hopefully, replacing the socket will cure it.

You know, I really should pay more attention. When I tested machine 1, I was sure I'd picked a working mouse but you were all right, it was the mouse that was faulty. Testing it with another cheese wedge type mouse gives a working pointer. Hurrah! One down, two to go. :)

Re: A3000 Battery Damage Repairs

Cheers Paul. Unfortunately, I don't think it's the mice at fault in this case - the ones I've used to test all work correctly on other machines. Still, with a bit of luck it shouldn't be a big deal to repair the first two machines. The thing about A3000 battery leaks for me is that the battery acid ...
