Favourite/best games list

Postby sydney » Tue May 27, 2014 2:23 pm

I used to hang out on Lemon64 and Lemonamiga and there was a thread on each forum where people listed their top 10 favourite games and a final list was compiled.
Lemon64
Lemonamiga

I think it would be interesting to see what the results would be here so I'm going to compile a list.
List your favourite 10 beeb or electron games here numbered from 1 to 10. Number 1 will get ten points, 2 will get 9, 3 will get 8 etc down to 10 which will get 1 point.
I'll let this run for a few months or maybe indefinitely and update the list 4 times per year.

Here is my contribution to start us off:

1 Exile
2 Elite
3 Starship Command
4 Frenzy
5 Thrust
6 Skirmish
7 Codename Droid
8 Icarus
9 Plan B 2
10 Empire

Cool plan Simon!

Ok, here's my top ten, which, I must say, was a tricky one! Some many to choose from!

1 Cybertron Mission
2 Cops n Robbers
3 Chuckie Egg
4 Elite
5 Classic Adventure (Melbourne House)
6 Shark Attack
7 Mystery of The Java Star
8 Starship Command
9 Felix in The Factory
10 Snapper

There are so many more that I should include but cant! That'll do ;)

Stuart :)

I never really knuckled down with Exile, and great though Elite is, I don't think it makes my 10...

1. Citadel
2. Skirmish
3. Cute To Kill
4. Chuckie Egg
5. Xor
6. Savage Pond
7. Microball
8. Magic Mushrooms
9. Mr Ee
10. Ransack

Man this is hard ...

1. Elite
2. Aviator
3. Swoop
4. Eagle's Empire
5. Rocket Raid
6. Swarmer's Revenge
7. Chuckie Egg
8. Starship Command
9. Mr Ee
10. Repton

And if I was allowed to choose another 30 or so ... JCB Digger (not a great game but I did play it a lot), Codename Droid, Ravenskull, Citadel, Planetoid, Impact, Monsters, Snapper, Arcadians, Castle Quest, Thrust, Bonecruncher, Zalaga, Sabre Wulf, Labyrinth, Dunjunz, Firetrack, Fortress, Wizadore, Galaforce, Ghouls, Imogen, Stock Car, Manic Miner, Moonraider, Pengo, Syncron, XOR, Video's Revenge, Zany Kong, Yie Ar Kung Fu.

Exile after my time, but would probably be in my list if I had played in BITD.

Maybe it should be favourite 50 games list - that might be a bit easier

I've edited the top post with the current top 49. As expected Elite is at the top followed by Exile then Starship Command. My top 3 just not in the correct order!

I don't think I'm as cultured as all y'alls! So:
1: Repton 3
2: Starship Command
3: Chuckie Egg
4: Bubble Bobble
5: $wag
6: Boffin
7: Codename Droid
8: Pengi
9: Airlift
10: Elite
I know it's a bit mainstream, but I'm surprised at the lack of Repton love! Oh, and Airlift has only made it in due to the high-score competition; thanks guys for introducing me to new games.

This really is an impossible task to pick 10 best/favourite BBC games, here goes (in no particular order)

1) Repton 3
2) Vindaloo
3) Boulderdash
4) Firetrack
5) Chuckie Egg
6) Jet Set WIlly
7) Caveman Capers
8) Nevryon
9) E Type
10) Mr EE

I recently did an artlcle in online magazine Drag N Drop picking what I thought were the best 26 games to showcase the BBC Micro. My choices were as follows, covering all types of game.

Elite
Exile
Repton 3
Jet Set Willy
Jet Pac
Summer Olympiad
Frak
The Sentinel
Firetrack
Galaforce
Codename Droid
E Type
Perplexity
Arcadians
Star Wars
Imogen
Mr Ee
Citadel
Arcade Soccer
Strykers Run
Castle Quest
Boulder Dash
Ziggy
Chuckie Egg
Fortress
Nevryon

And even that is just a small fraction of the quality games available.

I'm sure my list has changed a bit over the years and may do again before I eventually bite the worm, but this would be my top 10 as things stand. Not all necessarily the best quality games, but several here imbued with personal memories and significance:

1. Nightshade (Ultimate)
2. Banana Man (MRM)
3. Tetris (Mirrorsoft)
4. Free Fall (Acornsoft)
5. Nutcraka (Software Projects)
6. Arkanoid (Imagine)
7. Carousel (Acornsoft)
8. Citadel (Superior)
9. Percy Penguin (Superior)
10. Hopper (Acornsoft)

Nearly made the list:
Alien 8 (Ultimate)
Imogen (Micropower)
Chichen-Itza (Alligata)
Kix (Superior)
Firetrack (Electric Dreams)
See Emily Play (Sigma Six)

This seems to be an interesting yet seriously tricky one to get right.

I was never a fan of Elite or Exile back in the day, I was more a puzzle type of guy, so my list might be somewhat different to others on this thread. I've tried to include reasons why I list the game.

1 - Repton Infinity

This is top of the list for sheer customisation ability. Apart from the game being subtly different in execution to the earlier Repton titles (for example, spirits don't pass through earth and the controls are given priority over events), this set it apart and stopped it becoming samey. I wrote a few different themed games - one similar to Sokoban (with around 50 levels), one like Boulder Dash (with about 16 levels), one like Duke Nukem (only 2 levels), one like Pipe Mania (2 levels). If anyone would like a copy of the disc image(s) let me know.

2 - Acornsoft Snooker

Imagine the scene - early 1990's living in lodgings with a 22" Grundig TV with a BBC Micro Model B and this often kept the household entertained when we challenged each other to a game of snooker. Huddled around the screen with a Voltmace joystick each. I think my highest break was (is) 29. God awful colour scheme (which I broke in to and changed to something slightly more believable), lousy pixellated accuracy, awful 'straight' paths the balls follow, but at the time it was a whole lot cheaper than going to the snooker club.

3 - Snapper

What's not to like. Great game, so similar to the arcade version. Think my highest score was something like 186,000 or something back in the day. I even made a version which used my Chameleon Colour board to give a brown playing field and pastel shaded ghosts.

4 - System Wadgebury

This was on one of the cover discs of Disc User. What a simple idea but this also came with a game editor. Slightly annoyed by the fact you had to reload the game in order to choose another set of levels, so I think I removed the high score table and added a way to go back to the main menu by pressing a certain key, and made a whole load of new level sets. Unfortunately the disc I used now has bit rot so I can only get some of the levels off of it.

5 - Imogen

An absolutely brilliant game. Puzzles, challenges, humour, amazing graphics and was a right pig to complete in 150 'changes'. Don't think I ever managed to solve it completely.

6 - Repton 2

Never completed this, even with modern editor save/loads. It's a right pig. How did anyone ever think this could be done in one sitting. Still, highly addictive, something to get teeth stuck in to, and something to aspire to.

7 - Orlond's Meanies

Another Disc User game (this one I remember is on issue 10). The most memorable MODE 7 game I've ever played. Highly simple concept, exceedingly difficult to master. The level designs are a real success, with quite a few elements to discover before you can get to certain areas, and hidden areas to pick up a few extra points. Still play this one in emulators these days, and one day I will beat the game (something I've never done). I have played with extra lives (a zero page location holds the number of lives) but would like to find a 'poke' to give invincibility or to reduce the number of meanies to 0 so I can explore without interruption from being killed.

8 - Dogfight

Another of those two player games where each player tries to blow the other out of the sky. Interesting amount of customisation (clouds, lightning, etc.) and bearable sound make this something that I've never seen on any other platform since (probably never will).

9 - Bonecruncher

Beautiful graphics, great idea, fiendishly tricky levels and great music. This is how a game should be written.

10 - Barrage

This obviously 'BASIC' written game is simple to master yet gives another really lovely two player game which is not all about fancy graphics and sound.

One thing I notice here is that I've not got any games on here that were available (as far as I know) on other platforms. This wasn't done deliberately but I did notice when I was reviewing the list. Correct me if I am wrong. It just goes to show how unique games for the BBC Micro were. Just take a look at Jet Set Willy on the Beeb. It's awful. It has horrible background music and uses mono coloured sprites, and they couldn't even work out how to hide the cursor so it sits flashing away on the screen. Awful conversion from the Spectrum version. Wonder what would have happened if a Beeb Software house had been given the chance to do it.
I'm writing a game where you can change your character from a Wizard to a monkey to a cat.

Well, Imogen that!

Feel free to add you selection and I'll update the list as often as possible. I'm going to mention this on the Facebook group in an effort to get a few more selections. I'll combine the results into one big list.

I was never a gamer to the same extent as others on *. so all I can manage is a list of games I played a lot and enjoyed very much rather than a top 10 list of Beeb games of all time....

Elite
Yie-Ar Kung Fu
The Hobbit
Strykers Run
Ghouls
Beachhead
Commando
Frogger (Superior Software) (Controversial I know but I liked it!)
Felix and the Fruit Monsters
Kingdom of Hamil

EDIT: Removed numbers :D

IMHO notable omissions are :

Plan B (always prefered this to Plan B 2)

Spy Cat

Crazee Rider

Good to see Elite at the top of the list, it's possibly the one I've played the most ever, sometimes I'd play it every night for weeks on end, leaving my poor electron plugged all the time, that and Codename Droid, I've completed that quite a few times now without cheating or using the depth jump but it's still fun to play.
