33 and not quite 1/3

Started with the Beeb, Graduated to Arc, and subsequently 'downgraded' to PC

It depresses me to think what happened to all the old acorn/other 'non wintel'/mac comp gear that schools had. My Secondary school still had dozens of beebs and Arcs connected to and running all sorts of stuff when I left in '98. Maths dept loved its 20 odd beebs . Probably in a skip long before now :(

The average age of a stardotter is 44.4 earth years.
Well, I'm not going to change that, because I actually am 44.4 years old :)

Not sure it is possible to access Stardot from a BBC (go on, prove me wrong!), so I think the answer must be that everyone does!

40 1/6, so below average :-)

I wonder how well lynx on a VT-100 would display stardot. Hmm. 'Cos then a Beeb with a good terminal ROM and a modem dialing into an ISP which still supports dialup and gives a unix shell... e.g. Panix in New York.

Reading this on a 16MB R260 in ArcWeb is bad enough :-)

Are you saying that you were still at secondary school in 2003 ?

I'm 29, and I was in the first year of my undergrad in 2003.

If he's 26 now, in 2003 he'd have been 16-17. I also first met him (2008-09?) in circumstances that would seem reasonable for this...I'm afraid to say that his story seems to check out folks!

Haha

I'm adopting the convention that seems to be popular here

So I'm 31 (hex) ... yay! Cool! On good days (base 41 days) I'm 18 and sometimes (on base 24 days) I'm 21 once again

On really BAD (Binary Addition Days) I celebrated my 110th millennium last year

Hope that clears that up

:)

I was also 44 when you posted that. But since I'm late, I'm not now. Obviously (I hope) when I say "late", I don't mean that late. :o

I'm 45.

But besides the average age I'm still curious about the countries where the forum users live. Can we announce that in threat http://www.stardot.org.uk/forums/viewto ... =11&t=7052 ?

BTW ... how many women are on this forum?

I think there's at least a couple more - the Ninja Leporidae springs to mind.

Mind you, on the internet you have to be careful ... who knows what weirdos lurk around here. 8-[ :-# :-

I'm going to state I'm below the average age, quickly though before the more youthful lower it too much...

Sadly the 'yooth' of today will never experience the early '80s - where you had to basically do/learn everything yourself! Can you imagine that, computing without the internet*

* I really meant the 'www' but they wouldn't know the difference!

It's not just the internet, though, it's that search engine beginning with "G" as well. :D

How do I do X? What does that error message mean? Ask that search engine and chances later you have answers (often even the right one!)

BITD it was lots of time-consuming head-scratching and sometimes you just had to give up.

Open Source software is great, too. What is program X trying to do? Why that message when I try and do Y? Use the source, Luke!

I have fond memories of the 80s, but I'm happy with the search & documentation facilities we've got now, too.

Aye, that I am. (Though surely "hops" is more accurate than "springs"?)

100% agreed with this. Some things about computing are not as good (the time of computers that had some form of personality and community surrounding them is all but gone, for example, except for a rare few bright spots in modern times, like the Raspberry Pi), but some are so much better (like that mentioned in the statement with which I am agreeing) that I don't think I would want to go back and have to manage without them. :P
