Long time lurker, first time poster

Postby Boydie » Sat Jul 08, 2017 1:58 pm

Hi,

Thought it was about time I introduced myself. I've been using Acorn kit since my Model B in the 80s, and been collecting since the early 90s. I now have quite an extensive collection of machines, documentation, and software, quite a lot coming from friends inside Acorn. Aside from the usual mainstream stuff, highlights include:

System 3, plus several 8K boards, 32K board, 80x25 VDU, teletext VDU, ADC card, VIB card, Econet, lab interface cards
Pair of Atoms with Econet
Communicator
Briefcase Communicator
Acorn Isolated Word Recognisor (no software so don't know what words it recognises or even if it's voice or written word recognition)
80286 second processor (sadly uncased; a friend had a cased one, complete with label)
Various filestores, both stacking and non-stacking
Pair of Cambridge Workstations, one with usual 32016, the other replaced with ARM Evaluation Board and the elusive mouse board
Another ARM Evaluation System
Twin-floppy A310
A500 (sadly minus front panel)
A680 (has RISCiX 1.21c but unfortunately no A680-specific kernel)
R140 with FP copro podule

I also inherited a lot of software during Acorn's demise. I've never had time or expertise to try them out myself, but can upload images if people are interested and wish to investigate their contents for themselves. These (allegedly) include 32016 versions of BCPL, GCAL, and Modula-2, ARM-1 versions of C, BCPL, and Modula-2. And possibly TAOS for the RiscPC.

--- Tim

Welcome aboard ...

Looks like alot of Communicators are coming out of hiding in recent months, do you have any technical documentation with them?

I expect they'll be interest in your 32016 software too.

Spot on collection, Tim - welcome to the mad house. :)

Please tell us more about the System 3 - I have a Control Universal EuroBeeb here that is broken and needs a fix... and I believe the EuroBeeb was based on the System 3 design / architecture...

I would be interesting in seeing TAOS if you have it. I suspected that people may have obtained demos of it during a brief period late in Acorn's history but it hasn't surfaced so far. This thread was where I was doing most of my musings.

Any software images would be great but I'd be really interested in anything for the 32016. I've been trying to track down GCAL and BCPL for a while. If you need help archiving it, I'd be happy to help.

Hi Tim :) Welcome!

Very interested in seeing the old Acorn disk images! Again, especially the 32016 stuff.

I made images of the floppies some years ago as insurance against bit-rot, so everything already exists as dsd/ssd/adf files. It's more a question of where to upload them. Is there a central respoitory, or should I just start some threads and add the files as attachments?

I only have the four manuals the Communicator came with - View and Viewsheet user guides, BASIC reference manual, and Communicator user guide. The Briefcase Communicator came with no manuals at all, despite being brand "new" Acorn warehouse stock they were shifting one Acorn World. Should have come with a dictionary because Acorn clearly didn't know the difference between a briefcase and a suitcase. Never seen any technical docs.

It's a good idea to find multiple destinations for the disk images. I'm sure Peter (flibble) will want images for the 4corn archive and others like to maintain their archives (some public, some private) in order to minimise the chances of this stuff getting lost over time.

Can any of the forum admins give their opinion about starting threads with attachments? danielj?

Upload them to the archive submissions section. If they are images from originals then it's also nice to have scans of the disc labels for completeness.

Hello,
That's fine - please just go ahead and start a thread in the archive section with a title describing what'll be in it. You'll need to zip the images to attach them to the post, but that's fine too :)
