First word plus to PC

Morning, This is my first time so please be gentle! I had an Acorn 5000 from 1991 which all my children used for their school work and diaries. I still have the floppy discs with their work on in 'First Word Plus' - but the computer is long gone. Does anyone know how I can get my PC to read them so that I can put their work into PC Word documents. When I try to load the floppy it just says disc media is not recognised. I do hope you can help. Many thanks.

Hi there - have you got a PC with the floppy drive built in, or are you using a USB floppy drive?

If built in, you can use Omniflop to make a disc image, which we can then extract the files from :) Happy to talk you through that process!

Where about are you, I'm sure someone can help by imaging the disks?

It means to take the contents of the disk and put them into a file which can be read by emulators on a pc. You can then extract the files you want from the 'image'.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Chances are, there probably won't be an Archimedes owner living all that close to you, so the most practical way forward would be for you to post the discs to someone who can extract the files.

It would help to know how many discs are involved. I'd be happy to do a couple, but if it's a stack of 20 I might struggle to find the time to get them all done.

Col, if it's omniflop, you're looking at ADFS800k or ADFS1.6MB if it does those?

Welcome! :D

I wonder if places like the Centre for Computing History have considered setting aside a machine for members of the public to use for transferring files from old disks. Ideally, you would hope that this sort of service would be something that local libraries could offer.
