So many missing businnes and educational titles.

Postby bakoulis » Sun Aug 26, 2012 4:10 pm

Everyday, I drops an eye at ebay.uk for BBC micro stuff.
From what I saw, every popular game is present on the net archives (stairwaytohell, 8bs, bbc.nvg, etc.). I have tones with games. At contrast, applications and educational programs most are missing.
Is something wrong with the commercial programs and copyrights 30 years after? Maybe didn't search to the right places for applications?
I want to give some examples with interesting software that I can't find:

Can I find anywhere on net, disk and tape images (ssd, dsd, uef) with this kind of software?

That's great, I want thank you very much. =D>
The big question is, why isn't already archived anywhere?
Because are very rare, or for copyright reasons?

Hard to know - probably not the impetus. Certainly the 4mation titles have their copyright actively enforced. Very much doubt any of the others do though...

I have loads I am watching, as buy it now on ebay, that I would quite like to use but aren't in the archive. But at around £5 each, the hassle of getting them put into the archive and then selling on the tape, is just more effort than I have time for at the moment. I dare say the dame is true over lots of less popular titles.

And facing reality not many businesses are going to use 30 year old machines with 30 year old software. For example there will be legislative changes in the things like Tax every year so you bbc tax software will get it wrong and you will end up paying the wrong tax (and yes I know there are exceptions, but not many) so i guess no one has the got around to it.

And syllabuses change with regards education titles.

The software for sprites and the other for printed PCBs is useful even today.
Office software maybe less useful but I thing a must for retro lovers.
The educational software for astronomy, chemistry, maths, etc, is definitely fresh and my opinion are better from the today's PeeCees.
Finally I believe, every archived title saved (useful or useless) is a piece of history and must be survive for us and for the future generations.

My 7 years old daughter loves Repton 1&2 and I'd like to give a try with educational software.

Also I want we have save, as many as possible BBC serious software.
I don't worry for games because the most are already saved.

I struggle to get my 3 year old off the ipad and Wii. But I am gradually building a portfolio of education games and books for BBC. As well as the PI. To start her formal IT education :-)

My 3 year old loves using the light pen as she seems to relate to it more than touchscreens.

I've written a simple Peppa Pig colouring program for it and now we find her turning on the Beeb, monitor and drive unit and trying to load it!

Agree about the serious software stuff - I'm still looking for a copy of MicroBrush by Alan Burns :(

I also picked up some mathematical/engineering software a while back that I've not seen anywhere else and should be preserved.

I am guessing you spent a lot of time on the bbc, children usually copy. Our daughter been using iPad before she cold using a pen properly, I.e just over 12 months.

In fact she is doddering on iPad as I write thi, and has been for last 3 hours.

Not as much time as I'd like :D

She does like to copy me though - she often pretends that she's fixing something in my computer room.

I'm guessing because the games are more fun ... and are still fun now. A lot of the productivity software - not so useful any more?

I agree, though, great to preserve it all for history's sake!

I have tapes of VUCALC (I see Pernod's already uploaded that, though), Simonsoft DISASSEMBLER, and H & H's Alphabeta (a word-processing package.)

Also Beebugsoft's Teletext Pack.

I'll get around to uploading all this ... one day ...

I have just received Fun School, will see what I can do with it, I think only Fun School 2 in archive at present. But I mainly bought it as it was cheap so I could see if my one and only tape recorder was upto the job.

Pleased to say that fun school, along with new cassette cable and 25 year old personal cassette player loads fine on BBC. Next task is to work out all this UEF stuff. Then I can start buying the titles (Education, not interested in the business ones) and hopefully add them to the archive.

Audacity->CSW->Makeuef

As CSW from tape doesn't work on VMWare Fusion, or at least not in the 30 seconds I spent trying it. Didn't notice Makeuef had direct from tape option till after I had done it.

If someone could give it a go to make sure they can use it.

Need step build custom MOS for my Master so I can read the Tapes off of my GoSDC. And buy lots more educational titles off of ebay of course :-). Not sure how much time I will have for the next few weeks though.

Just casting an eye over that list of software you've got there, I noticed that you mention MS DOS and some kind of mouse driver.

These suggest to me that the machine you have been given might not be a Master 128, but instead the much rarer Master 512. This is a normal Master but with, in effect, an IBM PC compatible(ish) machine living inside it.

Beebmaster's website has some useful (illustrated) instructions on how to check out if you have a 512, and how to play with one if you do.

Just thought you might be interested!

Unfortunately not. Opened up the casing but there's no 80186 on the board. I'm assuming they must have had a least one at some time.

When I was at the school they were slinging the Archimedes to make way for PCs. God knows how the Beeb I got survived.

Can remember my Beeb having a mouse. Had GEMpaint (or something along those lines) and some other titles.

Just found a load of The Home Computer Course (24 issues - think there's one or two missing) if anyone want's certain issues (or all of them) made available.

Gempaint was a Master 512 program so it must have been a 512 at some point. What a shame it isn't any more!
