Console Combat is a two-day retro gaming event that will be taking place on the weekend of 25-26th July 2009 at the Lass O'Gowrie Pub in the Heart of Manchester, home of the monthly "Computer Club" gaming evenings. The event is intended to be a laid back gathering for the retro gaming community, giving visitors the chance to play a selection of classic arcade machines, 8-bit home computers and consoles, whilst sampling a selection of fine ales and good food. We will be running a selection of competitions throughout the weekend and will also be hosting the Homebrew Coding Geekend, an informal discussion forum for independent programmers from across the UK. Console Combat is being organised by the people responsible for past and future classic gaming events such as Retro Reunited, Retrovision and Byte Back so you can be assured that it will be of the highest possible standard! Tickets for the weekend are available online now. The homepage will be updated with the latest news and information regarding the event, so check back regularly to keep up with all the developments!

We are proud to announce that the RV team will be holding a competition with an Exclusive New Game created especially for the Retrovision Competition at Console Combat! Regular Retrovision attendee and fellow YakYak forum member Beerman of Beercave Software has created a great homebrew retro-styled game called "Markies Revenge". The aim of Markies Revenge is very simple. Guide the Sheepie to stay alive as long as possible and don't get killed by the green Markie Ming heads! The controls are also very simple, pressing space bar to start the game and move around the screen by using the arrow keys on the keyboard. You can also drink Beer and eat Curry to increase your score, but these also have realistic effects! The game will be left running on a PC all day, where you are free to have as many goes as you like (but please take it turns if there are other people waiting to play). If you make it to the high score table please enter your handle or a name we can individually identify you by. The winner with the higest score will receive a free ticket to attend Retrovision next year and a jug of Beer at this event. Retrovision is a yearly retro gaming weekend which takes place in a pub (much like Console Combat), and involves gaming, food, drink and fun. The next event is being held on the 5th, 6th and 7th February 2010 at the Folly Bridge Inn in Oxford. Tickets are limited and will be available to purchase at Console Combat.

Aye, I should probably have posted here before now but I've bought my ticket too. Mayhap we should all start submitting questions and answers now, then we stand a better chance of answering them on the night. What about the Battle of the 8-bits? Mat's looking a little alone there on Team Beeb. Are we actually any good at games-playing? "ideally not take more than 10-15 minutes to play one game" - guess Elite's out, then! Sam.

Mayhap, we could take along Zap!? That'd sort the men from the boys, and provide a bit of free advertising. If anyone's interested in making up a beeb team?
Sam.

well, if we all sign up, then we should only need to play one game each (we decide on the day who plays what games on the other systems), with one of us also trying to rack up a Zap! high score too. So that means you'd probably only have to play a single game all weekend, unless you're willing to have a few practice attempts first to improve your chances ... Sam.

Sounds good to me, although I'm fairly crappy at a lot of games, but yeah count me in!

OK, Steve, DaveM and Tom, are we all in? I can also probably drag in a friend of mine to make a full team complement of seven (including Mat). If everyone's on board, I'll drop Mat a line and tell him the beeb team is fully booked. Sam.

Well, I'm sitting in the hotel room, on Sunday as I write. It was a good day yesterday, much beer was drunk and even some chat about game development on the Beeb ! lthough probably not as much as we should have done, but it was a little noisy at times (but all part of the atmos). It was a smaller event than the others but the Acorn crew still showed up in good numbers and commondeered our own area I'm not going to waffle on too much here, I'll leave that to the people that have done both days. But one quick bit of news, Team Beeb (called Troggs Yoyo's) actually came second in the "Computer/Console/Games questions" related Pub Quiz. Not bad considering out of our team of 6, 3 of the team were definitely carrying the others (and I was one of those that was being carried - a lot). And Samwise.... well, I think he became the quiz Masters nemesis (Vote of No Confidence Sam )

Back home now safe and sound, could only make half the day Sunday as had to do my share of childcare! I really enjoyed myself. Doing any actual programming proved to be quite difficult because of the social nature of the event, but getting to chat with a couple of new people like Jason and Colin was very interesting. As Steve said, we perhaps could've talked a bit more tech, but nevertheless we had some very interesting technical chit chat, and the vibe was a lot more social at this one. The venue itself I thought was superb; great location, great beers, plenty of room and the curry they served was very good and included a vegetarian option. They also served full English breakfasts (again with a veggie option), which proved ideal 'day after' fodder. Ideal for the people who'd been drinking all night at the Karaoke bar up the road I also enjoyed the pub quiz, brilliant idea, and we came second (although I think we'd still have come second if it was just Tom on his own ) All in all, had a fantastic time, and I wouldn't hesitate to go to another one like this. Although it was a little smaller than other events I've been to, in many ways this made it feel a lot friendlier. Full marks to all involved!

I had a great time at Console Combat .... also found my Amiga game got quite a bit of attention at the Coding Geekend. Unfortunately, I didn't get around to showing the source code and discussing it as I was ever playing games myself, or getting drunk I always love the social aspects of these events .... here's to the next event.

We was robbed ! One of the questions on the Pub Quiz was "What computer released in 82 was the first sub £100 colour computer" The Oric was mentioned in our Team, TomW thought that came out in 83 and I was quite sure that the entry level 16K machine was £129 (as I ended up buying the more expensive 48K (£169) So we discounted this and couldn't answer the question. Just did some brief research (including WikiPedia) and all sources seem to confirm £129 and 1983. Bugger (we were right) and if we'd answered about another 10 questions correctly we'd have won

It was a great weekend.
Enjoyed talking to so many nice people, playing games, drinking and not coming last in the 8bit Comp. Really liked the setup and the venue was great to!
Look forward to the next one.

Had a great time at Console Combat, thanks to Dave and the other guys for bringing kit.
Enjoyed Zap, that was pretty good - got 743 in the Battle of the 8-bits competition, which was won by Team C64. Also emerged victorious with my team (The Soft Llamas) in the pub quiz.

Welcome BlackPanther, welcome Merman! And a big thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend such a success (especially StarshipUK, who brought along SO much kit!). To be honest, Mat and I were pretty disappointed with the number of ticket pre-sales but thankfully, plenty bought tickets on the door and this in turn resulted in a buzzing atmosphere throughout the day/evening. And I get the impression Gareth (landlord @ The Lass) is just itching to stage another gaming/coding do! Anyway, here are some images from *Day 2* (which was by far the quietest day); unfortunately I didn't take any snaps on the Saturday. However, Gareth did take a load on the first day (which I'm currently pestering him about!) so hopefully I'll have some more pics to show you soon. Ian the BeebMaster* has uploaded a few pics from Day 1 here: http://www.beebmaster.co.uk/Console/Console.html whilst there is also a photo collection on Flickr, here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1137126@N25 (I'll upload high-res versions of my photos to the Flickr group as soon as I can be bothered to create an account!). Finally, Rob O'Donnell has included a mini write-up on his blog, here: http://blog.irrelevant.com/2009/07/cons ... -2009.html* = I get the impression "BeebMaster" isn't really into gaming ... check out his captions for the PC-Engine and CD32 photographs to see what I mean! And I've just noticed Ian's caption for AMOSteroids: Quote: I thought I'd end with something seen very rarely - BeebMaster appearing in a game high-score table! The game in question is "Amosteriods", a brand new game for the Amiga written by Duncan Woody. Well it could have been worse, hey Duncan? (Just thinking back to what that bird on the mic called you at Byte Back ).

Request from Gareth "Prof Peach" Kavanagh (co-landlord @ The Lass) ... prof peach wrote: Wow!
Really pleased that people seemed to have a great time, albit the odd technical quirk (although thank you so much to the feller who fixed our Bomb Jack and the kind soul who helped get our monitor up and running in the office...). We we honoured to have so many people down to the Lass, and I just wish I'd had more time to chat, drink and play. If you're in town come and say hello, enjoy the cocktail cabs and bomb jack or come to our little Computer Club gaming nights on the last Tuesday of the month. And I think it's looking good for another gaming event in 2010. Watch this space... Retro lives!
So, with all this love swirling round - I come to ask a favour of you all.
We've just found out we've been nominated for best Pub in the Manchester Food and Drink Awards. Needless to say, we're the underdogs but every dog has it's day! So, if you enjoyed the Lass - you can help us out by;
Voting for us - http://www.foodanddrinkfestival.com/awards ; or
Posting a review at either http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/11/1144/Lass_OGowrie/Manchester (don't forget to stick it to the morons who hate the computers on the walls, mind) or http://www.qype.co.uk/place/153967-Lass-O-Gowrie-Manchester.
Help strike a blow for free retro gaming we say. And please circulate this as widely as possible - every little helps!
Best
Gareth I think it would be a really nice gesture if everyone who went to CC/HCG could stick in a vote for The Lass and perhaps write a quick review too. And I suppose it wouldn't do any harm to forward the voting link to as many people in your 'address book' as possible, either ... !
