From www.riscoslondonshow.co.uk:

Quote:
The RISC OS User Group Of London celebrates its 10th birthday with a bang by organising its first show!

From Beagleboards using the new ARM Cortex CPU, via the latest RISC OS developments on RiscPCs, all the way back to the BBC Domesday system, the first RISC OS London Show will feature an eclectic mix of the old and new.

Several of the exhibitors from the Acorn World show in Huddersfield will be attending the RISC OS London Show, including The Center for Computing History, Retro Clinic, Chris's Acorns, and Retro Software.

I've been invited to bring a subset of the Acorn World show to London, so you can expect to see a fair amount of Beebs on display (in addition to an MMC-based Atom and Electron, plus all the RISC OS stuff of course).

Tickets are only a fiver and quite a few of us are already going, so who else is up for this?

Their website seems to be a devoid of a "hand over $$$ for ticket" button...? Where do we buy them?

Mark.

Hey, you beat me to it =D> I created an account the other day just so I could reply to this message!

This is the first show that ROUGOL (http://rougol.jellybaby.net/) has organised so we didn't want the added admin of dealing with advance ticket sales. It also has the advantage that we can't be sold out

Hope to see lots of you there.

Bryan.

Although it's not far from me (well, a round trip on the M25), I've booked a Hotel room for the Friday night, as they seem very reasonable at £39.00

Mark.

So at the moment the only STH Members I'm aware of who've expressed an interest in attending (excluding Peter and Bryan!) are:

- me
- Mark (Retroclinic)
- Greg (regregex)
- Christopher Dewhurst
- Murray
- Francis Devereux (frankoid).

... as a couple of people have had to drop out.

Bearing in mind the total dearth of southern meets, /surely/ we can do better than six people?

Ok, time for a Roll Call - who else is coming?

Oh crap, I'd forgotten about this - I hope I can still come (my parents said yes at the time, but it could have changed (I'm only 15 if you didn't meet me at Console Combat))...

So, does anyone know where we meet? Presumably just in the hotel lobby/reception/whatever, but the site doesn't seem to say.

EDIT: Turns out I'm probably going to have to arrive late (1 or 2ish).

EDIT2: Actually, I might be able to come on time if I go on the train...

Enter hotel through main entry.

Take stairs (or lift, if you're lazy) to first floor.

Turn right then right again and it's right in front of you.

Pay on entry (£5).

See you later?

Mark: yep, that was a pretty uninspiring roll-call (though I did receive a few more commitals as a result of the mass-spam I sent out a few days ago).

The seeming lack of interest in this show (within the 8-bit community) is almost astonishing if you bear in mind all the whining that went on on the Mailing List earlier this year, regarding the lack of Southern Beeb meets!

Anyway, if there's anyone reading that can get to Feltham in the next 1.5hrs, get your butt down here!

Even if the RISC OS exhibits don't float your boat, there'll be plenty of exotic 8-bit Games and Hardware to keep you entertained (Datacentre USB, CF-IDE for BBC and Electron, GoMMC, AtoMMC etc).

Pics of our area from the setup day (taken at about midnight last night!).

I'm coming on my own. Typing this from a train. Will be at the hotel at 10 to 11 if all goes well.

Currently on second leg of journey, between basingstoke and clapham

I took a few on my phone, as well as a video of me going round all the computers set up. I'll get those uploaded.

See, Samwise? That's why we needed you there (I don't 'do' reports because I'm crap at them).

Camera battery ran out on the Friday and forgot to bring a charger.

Still, I did manage to squeeze *three* more photos out of the thing on Saturday. Here's one of them (it appears to be some kind of dodgy Dynablaster clone):

Oi, stoppit you! ;)

Really enjoyed myself and was genuinely surprised at just how much interest there was in ALL of the 8-bit stuff.

Great to put faces to a few more members of the community (Frankoid, TrevJ, Flibble, Theo) and it's always a pleasure to hook up with folks from previous shows again (retroclinic, chriswhy, Jason F, Ian S, Muzer, Christopher D, Steve F & Terry M from WROCC, helpful, sa110, Neil Faz ... and anyone else that I've forgotten to mention!).

It's certainly inspired me to attend (and exhibit at) the Midlands Xmas Show in Birmingham on 5th Dec (anyone else wanna come?).

Just for the record: I know the main hall looks empty in Mark's pic, but that's 'cause the RISC OS Open talk began 10 minutes earlier and the majority of punters were in the theatre!

The show was actually extremely busy right through until 5pm and Bryan (plus all of the other helpers and organisers) have got to be chuffed to bits with every aspect of how the (inaugural) RISC OS London show went.

Speaking of which, said helpers were an absolute godsent when it came to loading and unloading my estate with the mountains (and mountains) of computers/screens I'd brought with me.

The refreshments out of the vending machines were surprisingly cheap too ... for example, 50p for a can of coke (when you typically expect hotels to charge £1.50-£2.00). All I can say is that the St Giles certainly puts Cedar Court Huddersfield to shame (who charge three quid for a pint of coke poured from a 2L bottle!!).

Anyway, I'm going stop myself now (before this *does* turn into a report!).

Excellent report Dave - well written, atmospheric and generally enthralling.

Here's a couple more photos, a mix of the RISC OS and Retro bits.

Some taken just before the show started, so it looks a bit empty

There's a good report in the new issue of Archive ... if you're not a subscriber, you might be able to take advantage of the special offer to obtain a free copy?

Not anymore - Jim Nagel took over a couple of years back.

From the homepage:

It was founded when the Archimedes computer was new by Paul Beverley, who edited it every single month for 20 years. Jim Nagel (of Abbey Press Glastonbury) succeeded him in August 2007, when Paul's "last and final" issue (20:12) went to press.

I'm.... kind of stunned. The fact that it was still going until 2007 under Paul's helm is amazing enough... that it's still going, like a regenerated Doctor Who, is simply blinding. (That's good)

I knew Paul, kind of, way back. Really hope he's doing OK.
