RISC OS SouthWest Show - Sat 25th Feb, 2017

Postby BigEd » Tue Jan 17, 2017 4:56 pm

I haven't seen this mentioned here - anyone been before? (A quick search shows a discussion from 2014, saying not much 8bit content. I see this year they are having a Raspberry Pi section - not 8bit, but perhaps relevant to our interests, given the PiTubeDirect with its NativeARM emulation.)

It's at a hotel just down the M5 from Bristol:
The location, as in previous years, is the Webbington Hotel, near Weston- super-Mare, just 25miles south of Bristol, approximately 10mins drive from Junction 22 of the M5.

Hat-tip to Revaldinho who spotted it.

I've been for the last few years. It's very much focussed on RISC OS and there's been no real 8-bit content (apart from a few old books on the charity stand).

I go because it's the nearest show to me and it's useful to find out what's been happening in the RO market.

However, even though I've been a few times now, I always seem to get lost on the way!

There's a fair chance I'll pop round to Revaldinho's and we'll go - perhaps we can have an impromptu 8bit huddle/meetup! I might remember to wear an element14/raspberry pi shirt. I wish I had a Beeb Owl shirt.

I know I haven't posted the details yet but there is also going to be a Teletext fest at the CCH in Cambridge that weekend which will definitely have some 8-bit interest (as I'll be there.) But mostly a lot of Teletext.

Sounds like it needs a signal boost! Will there be a Digitiser and BamBoozler element? Telesoftware??

The RISC OS SouthWest Show is at a hotel right next to the motorway, but a bit of a distance from a motorway junction...

Try this route if travelling South bound on the M5.

I mentioned this thread to one of the show organisers the other day and they would be very happy to provide table space for an ABUG/8bit meetup :-)

This is your chance to make it happen!

I'll be there with my (metaphorical) ROUGOL hat on :-)

Just to be clear, it wasn't a criticism just an honest reflection of what I've found in the past. I'm interested in the 32-bit scene as well and, given it's the closest show to me, I'm not too bothered that the focus isn't really on the 8-bit machines.

However, I could bring some kit along (possibly my M128 with enhanced video ULA) if others are interested in meeting up. However, I tend to get there early and then leave early as there's usually a Six Nations match on in the afternoon.

I've been to the 2013 and 2016 South-West shows, along with IanS. It's a bit smaller and a lot (for us) further away than Wakefield, but worth a look once in a while.

I think we'll go - I'll cadge a lift from Revaldinho. It would be nice to meet any Stardot people there. I'll be wearing a black baseball cap, and other clothes. That should narrow it down.

The RISC OS South West Show is a week on Saturday - I've spoken to Richard Brown, one of the show organisers, and he's very kindly offered to provide us with some table space for an ABUG type meet-up. We'd obviously still have to pay for our entrance fees but there'd be no additional charge :)

I'm happy to bring some kit along - I was thinking of demoing my enhanced video ULA and perhaps bring a matchbox co-pro, DC and BeebOPL.

If others want to bring any kit, I'm happy to coordinate. I've got a number of Beebs so can bring more or less of my own stuff as required.

It would be great to see some Stardot folks there!

Is anyone else thinking of bringing any kit along?

If not, I was thinking of bringing a Beeb with my enhanced video ULA, a Compact with GoSDC and a M128 with DC and matchbox co-pro.
