Not really. All DiscKnight does is convert all the free space on the disc into files which you can then go through by hand to try and find your lost data in them. Your file may be just a small part in the middle of a larger file, or fragmented across lots of them. Might have been useful on a floppy disc but impractical on a hard disc of any decent size.

I agree about DisKnight. Great at hard disc recovery, but not much use as an undelete tool. There was an "undelete" module (by Vertical Twist I think) that kept a track of deleted files and allowed recovery, but it was messy to use. Another option is to use one of the myriad "Trashcan" tools, that just moved the files into a directory rather than deleting them.

Thanks for the comments. On the Amstrad PCW I had this tools disk which basically gave me a dump of the file structures on the disk and all I had to do was change an E to an 0 and like magic the files would reappear. Was hoping for something like that. Never mind, I guess I have to rebuild the directory from the ground up. My fault.
