AnyMode v0.04b released for RISC OS on the RPi

Postby steve3000 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:43 pm

Ok, so this isn't really 'retro', since it requires a Raspberry Pi and RISC OS 5 to make use of it... but I wrote this to enable me to finish some work on a retro-project for the Pi (more on that coming soon).

AnyMode does away for the need to use 'mode definition files' on RISC OS 5 on the RPi. It simply allows any screen mode X and Y resolution to be used automatically. Try entering a mode using any dimension in the DisplayManager, and providing X is divisible by 16 and Y is divisible by 2, then the mode will work!

Download AnyMode from http://www.pi-star.co.uk/anymode

It works because the RPi graphics processor fits and scales (if necessary) all graphics output to suit the attached monitor - so monitor-specific mode definition files are completely redundant. AnyMode will not load or run on any other RISC OS hardware - only the RPi.

For those who run RISC OS on the RPi, version 0.05 of AnyMode is now available.

Download AnyMode from http://www.pi-star.co.uk/anymode

And for that retro feeling, AnyMode enables MODE 7 on the RPi :)

Hello, Steve.
Tried to find your Anymode module, but the web link you gave doesn't work, whether temporarily or permanently i know not.
In an article for the upcoming Archive magazine, the writer mentions Anymode, so I'd like to publish the correct current details.
Could you email me, please? Contact details are given on the website (archivemag.co.uk)
Thanks. --jim nagel (editor)

I've put a locally hosted copy on the JASPP site, as ADFFS relies on it to work

Thanks for fixing the link, Steve!
Please contact me by email, though, regarding the article being prepared for Archive magazine?

I am having trouble with AnyMode, placed it in the right directory but my screen goes completely black when starting a game and need to reboot the Pi. Tried it with two monitors as well, any ideas guys? Thanks! (Using it for ADFFS)

If you're running a recent build, have you done the following:
  • (optional) If you're running a ROM build of 14th Dec 2016 or newer and find some games don't display, you need to disable GPU mode change support by creating !Boot.Loader.CMDLINE/TXT with "disable_mode_changes" in it.

No I haven't done that, will try it now, thanks.
