"Working Football" 3.5" Disc

Postby Dave_E » Fri Jul 14, 2017 8:04 am

This is really a long shot...

A long time ago, I collected a software lot from a guy. Amongst the 3.5" ADFS floppies (mostly the usual T2P3 compilations of games!) was a game called Touchdown. This was advertised in the back pages of Electron User and is one of the few Elk games that hasn't yet been found and preserved.

Unfortunately the disc looked as if it had been underwater at some point and despite a few people's efforts, it seems nothing is recoverable from it.

A few days ago I was looking through the books that also came with that lot and, as I opened up Start Programming, I found a 3.5" disc inside it. It's labelled "Working Football" in handwriting.

Perhaps this is a copy of Touchdown. The disc looks to be in better condition than the original but I'm very dubious about putting it in a disc drive. Does anyone want to volunteer to try and recover any data off it?

Col, if you really don't want to risk it, I can run it through my kryoflux system. I'm fully armed against gunking it up these days and we used it to successfully recover the Adventure writing system software.

no need for all that nonsence  recovered about 20+ education 51/4" discs a year ago no problem... with an elk & UPURS :D

good news, two files called FOOTBALL & FOOTIE, both same
bad news, they are ADFS &500 size format  , so after a case swap

^as can see, bit different from mine on bottom....

very bad news, it's the SUBOSS type in game from Electron User 1987 4.06 that I typed in BITD properly.
it has a bug, line 160 needs FOR X not FOR x, and move down to &E00 for tape save.
put mine on the disc too, but both are about same with same teams :(

How? Is that something one can do to a disc drive retrospectively, or is it just knowing which one to buy?
I'm working on http://bbcmicro.co.uk

Nothing special, just a bucket of IPA and I've become fairly adept at cleaning the drive heads (plus I tend to run my archiving drives without screws in the lids so I can get at the heads easily)...

^screws intact :? What are they....

I just use Surgical spirit (10p Asda 35yrs ago!) & cotton bud to clean all my drives, so that's my 3 that done this disc now working perfect again :D

Also works well with my 51/4" drives, never use disc cleaners, they just spread the gunk about & transfers to other drives [-X

Surgical spirit has caster oil in it too IIRC - must be keeping your disk surfaces nicely lubed :D

Bugger!

Ah, well. If I find the original Touchdown disc next time I'm at my parents, I'll send it on to you and maybe you'll be able to recover it.
