Ok, this is a classic and I remember getting through a lot of it BITD but the key layout is pretty rubbish and the speed is crazy fast.

Any tips for configuring keys on an emulator as I don't have access to my beebs

Best I can get for today... made it to the maze with 3 lives but just couldn't time the forward/reverse technique.

I haven't tried doing the keyboard. I use Beeb-Em but will try to configure it to use the more 'standard' keypresses and see if that helps. This is fast. I've only been through the 'caves' once and dies quickly on the 3rd screen for a pretty low score but....here it is anyway.

I used to play this in Iceland and it took me a long time to get the keyboard layout to feel 'natural'.

This with the keys reconfigured so that A=backward, X=forward, SPACE=Bomb, '=up, /=down, RETURN=Fire

This is a really good game, up to the usual Acornsoft high standards, but massively spoilt by utterly ridiculous controls, who thought this was a good idea? the worst keyboard selection since Felix in The Factory !

I tried re configuring the keys but for some reason my BeebEM presses 'SHIFT' when any reassigned keys are used and so makes the ship move all the way forward making it uncontrollable. I have this problem in other games as well where SHIFT gets auto pressed... maybe it's time to revert BeebEM to defaults and try again :?

All I can say is it took me a few tries to get what I wanted and even that's still not super in this game..... it's a mind thing, too much for it to do too fast.... but you should be able to get it to work, just remember, I'm using Beeb-Em so don't know how it works for configuring B-Em.

I do usually use BeebEm but I tried B-em to see if I could get a better key layout (due to BeebEm spazzing out)... B-em seems to of worked a bit better but still think the controls could be laid out nicer for a better chance in the trickier sections.

Still can't fathom how I played this in the past, youth and hours of practice I guess :o

Played around a bit more with key mappings, still not happy but a little better then before. Using WASD, TAB and Enter

Made it part way through the maze but those pixel perfect maneuvers are tough to master.

A bit too fast for me... I'm just getting started so hope to improve. I can almost get to the end of the second level... 7020

The keyboard layout is awkward (It's the same as Planetoid), but I guess I got used to it BITD so changing it feels strange now.

Now up to level 3... 11,300.

No, but consider this, on new technology we have the means to make it look 'old'..... just a thought.... ;-)

Had another go, got a bit further into the yellow maze, still struggling with the key layout and speed but sometimes seem to get it working right.

I'm not worried. When I get the chance I will rip her apart, troubleshoot the issue and then get on with it. This forum has such great techs when it comes to electronics that I'll never really be stuck. I will have her working again soon.

and yes, I truly suck at this game too, though used to be pretty good at it.

Catching up now Ed =D>

On one of my highest scores I actually died just before reaching level 4 (before the terrain turns blue) forcing me to repeat level 3, really boosted my score up a bit past 20k :-

Good to see a few people giving this game a go, it's not everyones idea of fun but I fondly remember winter high school lunchtimes BITD kids having to line up at the computer room trying to secure a spot for the weekly Rocket Raid challenge and it was hugely exciting. The whole room would be filled with sound of games in various states of play, great times!
