PM Folder Problems

Postby hoglet » Tue Jan 26, 2016 11:58 am

Hi Guys,

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing problems with PM folders and inconsistent message counts.

A few weeks ago I created a PM folder called 2015, and moved all of last years PMs into it (approx 150 I think).

I've just checked it, to try to find a message JGH sent me last January, and it's in a bit of a weird state. It says

Code: Select all

Folder is 3% full (7 out of 210 messages stored)

But I can see at least 50 messages, and I think there are more, but for some reason it paging controls are not being shown.

It looks to me like the folder message counts have got out of sync with the actual contents (and the database schema allows this!)

As a test, I created another folder "2015-1", and moved some messages from "2015" into it. At this point two things happened:
1. Another 50 Older messages "appeared" in folder "2015"
2. The message count was wrong in folder "2015-1"

Just wanted to mention this, in case it's a symptom of a worse problem.

Dave

It must be related to new folders being created. I have two additional folders, but they were created a couple of years ago. I can move messages to them, and everything works as expected. Indeed, I did this on Monday without any problems.

I was trying to figure this out myself. :-k

Haven't created any new folders at all.

Inbox: Folder is 99% full (208 out of 210 messages stored)
Outbox (1): Folder is 0% full (1 out of 210 messages stored)
Sent messages: Folder is 99% full (209 out of 210 messages stored)

Is it coincidence that I've got 210 messages as a total, like yours, Dave?

Not providing any answers, but maybe my numbers provide more clues?

Hello Admins,

It looks like this problem of inconsistent message counts with new folders is still present.

I've just moved all of last years messages out of my inbox into a new folder called 2016, and I'm now unable to page through the messages. The messages are all there, because I can see the first page and last page by changing the sort order.

I've also got a second folder called 2015-1 that I can't export the messages from.

Is this a known issue?

Ergh. Not that I'm aware of. There's nothing let lets me kick this to reindex or anything like that... I've changed the number of allowed messages to 400. Does that make a difference?

No, it's just the same.

Here's what I did to cause the problem:
- created a folder called 2016
- went to my inbox and sorted to ascending
- mark all messages on first page and selected move messages to folder 2016
- repeated the above step 3 more times

The message count for the 2016 folder is showing as 4, it should be about 200.

I wonder if there is a bug with "move messages" where instead of increasing the message count by N it increases it by 1.

Dave

PS, this isn't actually causing me a problem, because I first exported all the PMs to XML files, so I can actually get at everything.

What happens if you try exporting from the new folder?

It exports the first page of results, which I think is by design. i.e. you need to page through and export each page separately. But due to the message count issue, the paging controls are not visible.

So looking like, as per your posts from last year, the messages are there, but the system is not showing the correct message count, and as it thinks there are only one page worth (or less), is not allowing you to access the next page of messages.

Sounds like a problem with the board software.

It's not unique to this forum - a search finds this: "So they did move properly. It is just that the pm_count value in phpbb_privmsgs_folder is not correctly populated for some reason and thereby causing problems"
