Wandering images on Stardot

Postby DutchAcorn » Mon Jul 04, 2016 3:33 pm

Recently I'm getting images previously posted by Mark to show up in the signature of Zarchos. Not suspecting anything out of the ordinary (the meaning of Zarchos' signature can take a few days to reveal itself), today I also found this image to semi-randomly appear in other places.

To add to the mystery; I am not seeing this on my iPad.

Anyone else experiencing this?

What browser are you using? Also have you tried clearing the image cache?

I'm just taking over the world

As Jon says, it's an image cache issue, sometimes caused by an error during a download.

I once had an avatar image replace some of the icons on the index pages, that was fun

Typically, when images get replaced it's because the browser renames files in its cache using some form of hash and sometimes but not very often two images can end up with the same hash because the hashing algorithm isn't varied enough.

This is why people are moving away from the MD5 hash as there's a lot of scope for clashes these days so unless you're using it for speed within a confined namespace with no security dependencies there are better hash algo's available. Unfortunately, most browsers use the MD5 hash for their cache indexes so there's a likelihood of a hash collision if you don't clear out your cache every few months and the collision when it happens results in the wrong images (or other cacheable asset) getting served sometimes as per the reason for this thread.
