Suggestion/request

Postby pkersey » Wed Jan 15, 2014 11:13 pm

Hi! I've been an active Acorn enthusiast for quite a while now and I am thankful for the true spirit of community I found here at Stardot.

I have a small suggestion with regards to the "code" snippet highlight. It's lime green, its font size is small and therefore definitely hard on the eye.

Code: Select all

* example snippet

May I suggest a less hurtful green, or perhaps any other (non-fluorescent) colour?

* example 1
* example 2
* example 3

Thanks!

This we could do without much trouble, but I think we'd need to hear that it's something the majority would prefer. To that end, I've modified your first post and created a poll. If people want to vote to change it to one of your alternative suggestions they can, or they can cast a vote to say they'd prefer to keep the current green ... or choose to specify another colour entirely.

I've set it to run for a month. Let's see what the outcome is ...

Sam.

What do people think about a darker green like this shade (004000)?
What do people think about a darker green like this shade (006000)?
For comparison, this green shade is still a bit too light for me. (008000)

For me, either of the two darker green shades above, or the blue * example 3 is okay with me.

Great. If anyone prefers 1024MAK's suggestions, please vote for other and leave a comment which says which of his colours you prefer.

I don't want to add them as a poll option, as it will reset the current poll, forcing everyone to re-vote.

Also, anyone who has already voted can also change their vote right up until the poll ends, if they prefer one of the newer suggestions.

Cheers,

Sam

Have changed my vote to Mark's darkest shade of green (004000).

My concern about using blue is that it's the same colour we use for hyperlinks.

The code is show in a separate block so IMHO there isn't much confusion with a hyperlink.

Any chance of an update to the default colour now?

No opinion on the choices offered. All have a decent amount of contrast. Will be happy with any of them.

Oh, I see now that the poll has a few more days to run. Fairly clear at present that something darker would be well appreciated!

I think I prefer Mark's #004000 to the blue - I'm still programmed to interpret blue text as hyperlinks, especially since it became fashionable to show them without underlines.

The blue is indeed the most readable and the current poll leader (probably for that reason) but it does then clash with [URL] tags which puts things in blue.

006000 works for me.

Can the background be changed? I think part of the problem with green is the light background colour.

Either Mark's darkest shade of green (004000).
or medium green (006000) are fine by me

Anything darker than current, green is fine.

I use (controversially) green for the hyperlinks in my website and I deliberately chose the colour #0BBC0B.

While we're waiting, here's a bookmarklet to change the colour of code in the current page:

javascript:(function(){var x=document.querySelectorAll('.codecontent');for(var i=0;i<x.length;i++){x[i].style.color="#040"}})();void(0)

Just drag that code to your bookmarks bar, then edit the bookmark to name it appropriately. You can of course edit the colour too.

On a tablet, create a new bookmark (of any web page), then edit it, cut out the whole URL and substitute the above line. Also, rename it.

Looks useful.

Ironically I missed this post the first time around but only last night when trying to read a code block late at night I as thinking 'This Green is really hard to read when'

So +1 for a darker colour. Dont mind if blue, dont think in practice I would get confused by hyperlinks as they are underlined as well.
