Genre - strategy or simulation?

Postby BigEd » Thu Aug 18, 2016 7:03 am

I was looking for (non-adventure) games which don't need a real-time response. Would it be better to call these strategy games rather than simulations?

There are probably different kinds of these, but the ones I managed to stumble on were:
1984 http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=937
Airline http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1549
Candyfloss http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1317
Dallas http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1030
Great Britain Ltd. http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1537
J.R. http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1918
Millionaire http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1072
UK PM http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1618
Wheeler Dealer http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1296

I see some of these have subgenres of Business and Politics. Any others?

Is there any port or equivalent of Oregon Trail on the Beeb? How would that be categorised?

I think strategy fits the bill best.
Even though I have some of these as "business simulation" .
Oregan trail et al would be best described as resource management.
Probably.

Good thought. So perhaps we have
strategy/business
strategy/politics
strategy/resource management (or should that be strategy/survival)
and I imagine there might be
strategy/wargame

That sounds good to me.
John Flaxcottage may be the man to ask about Oregan Trail clones...
