ABC 310 80286 Co-Pro ROMs

Postby Pernod » Sun Jul 02, 2017 4:48 pm

Do we have the ROMs from the 80286 co-pro anywhere? I'd imagine them to be very similar to those from the 80186 but would at least expect a different startup banner that doesn't mention 80186.

The 80186 Co Pro ROM detects the processor type, and customises the boot message (and help message) to 80186 or 80286 accordingly.

So it is possible they were the same.

That's good to know, maybe I should've just tried it. Thanks.

I see from photos that the 80186 board has a 20MHz crystal and the 80286 has a 12MHz crystal. I'm sure I read somewhere that the 80186 was clocked at 10MHz (so divide by 2) but also seen it described at 8MHz, which is it? And what's the 80286 clocked at?

Also, how's the 1MB mapped in the 80286 board?

I don't have my references to hand, but I'm fairly sure it's mapped the same way as in the 80186:
&0xxxx to RAM
&Exxxx
&Fxxxx ROM - RAM inaccessible

So is that RAM or ROM at &Exxxx? Do we know what the ABC310 reports at startup, 896K or 960K?

Edit: I see it reports in 128K blocks, so 896K will be shown.

There's a change you can make to the ROM to make it count in 64K blocks and report 960K RAM.

Can't point you to the info as half the internet has gone down from my perspective, including mdfs.net grrr. Somewhere in mdfs.net/tube/8086

Did you already find a copy of these? If not, I unearthed my 80286 board the other day and I have just exhumed my EPROM programmer so I could image them for you if required.

The general consensus is that they are the same as those in the 80186 board. Would appreciate your images though, if only to confirm either way.

Thanks, I've compared CRC's with those from the 80186 board and they match.
