Boxed, unused Sinclair C5! I usually advocate the use of (retro) technology as opposed to shelving it, but there are exceptions. 8)

Quite so Paul. Upgrade the battery to a Lion type, say 24v 500W, have the CPU re-mapped to take the extra power, install an audio amp playing a track of a formula 1 car and fit disk brakes all round.

I realise this is a bit of a joke, but you really can soup it up.

For example: http://www.c5owners.com/sinclair-c5-pro ... ouchscreen

Whether or not it is safe to do so is another matter. My recollection of owning one is the chassis flexes most alarmingly when you apply the rear brake, because it is only on the right hand wheel (power goes to the left hand wheel). If you go down a steep hill, the speed it can reach will quickly outstrip its ability to slow down quickly. In the case of the linked-to mod, it does not look as if the owner has uprated the brakes. Dangerous..

Yes, they are a tempting proposition.

However, they are really noisy in use and have a limited capacity. :?

I reckon I'll have to fold when the bidding goes over £1000.

First servers I ever hacked. There were so many way to do it    Brute force was fun because it made the drives work hard and caused them to make a pretty terrible grinding noise :-o

I bet there is an old cupboard in a college or school somewhere full of those old servers.

Probably sealed behind drywall and everyone had forgotten that there was ever a cupboard there.

Interesting, but that's a lot to pay for a computer which can't run much other than it's own version of Arthur. It'd be nice to know if it has ARM1 inside...

Also the description is a little bit LOL.
This machine is an Acorn A500 and is one of 100 that were built as the first prototype ARM based machines. Made in 1986, It pre-dates the A305/310 by some 12 months

The photo clearly shows the serial number which says "249" and "4/5/87". So is this number 249 of 100? And the date is just over 1 month before the first A305/A310s were available (June '87). Date of '87 is also on the PSU.

Still it's nice to see something like this available... I wonder how much it will go for...

Due to manufacturing demand issues they had them manufactured in 87 and shipped to 86 by time machine.

The chap selling it is over on the FB forums; you could ask him some questions there I would think. I'll direct him here though too.

These titles went for £25+ each! Way beyond their value and what I was prepared to pay. Things are getting very silly out there in ebayland. :?
