It depends.
Can you write 'The Archimedes was the best computer to own in the late 80ies and early 90ies ?'.

I'll do virtually anything for an IDE podule (within reason, with a few caveats) [-o<

OK.
Are you after one that can handle CF cards for sure and with the formatter, or you could handle this on your own ?
It can be time consuming ...

Ideally I'd like one that definitely works with either CF cards or with an IDE->SD adapter.

I have a working sd card in my A3020 so I would probably just make a disk image of that and then pop it into the A3000 - hopefully this would save the hassle of formatting and setting up the card.

OK.
So give me some time checking what I've got available, and do some tests with the boards.
I'll ask about 100€ + shipping.
I think it's very reasonable, and that's because you're a *. member.
You could also check the BIN Archies on EBay and find yourself one with this minipodule.

Some people will say 100€ is expensive, knowing I grabbed some machines with IDE for this price, but hey, they should understand in the past I also spent some money on machines which are for the junkyard so except for a few parts, it was a net loss.
It's like trading on the stock markets : people tout their gains but rarely their losses.

Cool, that's fine by me, I've been looking for quite a while and the few that appear on eBay always seem to get snapped up quick when I'm not looking, and CJE charge the earth.

Let me know if you have something suitable and then I'll send you a PM.

Thanks!

Could you *. members confirm the castle IDE minipodule is the best suited for Trixster because it uses the Acorn ADFS 'system', thus Trixster could decide to simply remove the card he's got in his A3020, connect it to the Castle board, and it would work a treat.
(I know it's not what he intended to do).

I think that means it'll have the same issues with CF cards as the A3020 does?

Yes.
But remember there's the whizzo rom he can softload from a diskette, 1st, and it solves most if not all issues ...

But that sort of defeats the purpose of having a HDD! :D The bonus is it removes most reliance on floppies.

d.

(for the record, I'm just getting the bits together to test a theory with the castle board!)

I agree there'll be a delay to use your hd (about 5 seconds to load an ultra tiny file and ctrl break to reboot) ...

The 2 chip sd card adapter works in the A3020 so maybe it'll work with the castle podule too?

Should do - it's just if you want to run another one, those are hard to get. I can test that later if you'd like?

I believe so, but it's where I'd like to have confirmation from *., it uses the same chip found in the A3020 or A4000.
Or at list a subset of this multi I/O chip.(of course the IDE part).

Or it's only software (ie the filer) but I don't know RISC OS well enough.

When I ask stupid questions, it's always to go to sleep at night being a bit less an idiot ....

It's for 2,5 '' hard drives, so that should be 40 ...

It's 44pin - 40pin is 3.5" ide.

Well I can't seem to find the 2 chip sd adapter anywhere online now.

So is it a lottery whether a cf adapter will work with a castle ide podule?

No, the 2-chip ones are basically non-existent. I'm going to test mine with an SD-CF in a CF-IDE adapter, but the ebay seller sent me the wrong thing. If it works then there's a reasonable solution for the time being, both for the CastleIDE board and the A3020, using SD cards (which is frankly better than using CF cards which are becoming rather rarer in themselves). Watch this space.

The CF adapter will work, the lottery is the CF card. Most don't work AFAIK.

Cool, I actually have a cf-sd adapter so it'll be good to know if it works better than going through a cf-card lottery.

Don't forget the DOMs ... no adaptors needed, and they are cheap !
I've got one fitted in the external port of a Risc Developments IDE minipodule, and it works a treat ! (I soldered the 2 flying wires to the 'power' pins on the A3000 motherboard).
Why bother with CF/SD adaptors when you've got this cheap and efficient solution ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from= ... 5573.m1684

I'll run some tests this week to see how they behave with the various IDE minipodules I own, and standard chipset as found in the A3020 / A4000, I'll report in a new thread what works or not.

Of course I can provide a working DOM with the IDE minipodule I'll sell.
I've been wanting (proper English ? Not sure) to replace all my hard disk drives / CF or SD cards with adaptors by DOMs for a long time, so I'm going to do it at last.

No.
Last week end I enjoyed baie de Somme and Berck's beach (and oysters + other seafood. Marvellous. With white wine).
Expect some news for this week end.
I need to find where my box of DOMs is ... not an easy task : which house ? Which floor ? Which room ? Which parcel / storage box / cupboard ?

I've got a Castle mini-podule in my A3000 but had trouble getting it to work with various CF cards. In the end, I got it working with a dual CF adapter and two Sandisk 256MB cards. For some reason, it won't work reliably with only one card installed but is rock solid with two!
