Looking for a single keyswitch off a broken Beeb

Postby jonb » Thu Apr 13, 2017 7:11 pm

Hi

Has anyone got a spare keyboard switch from a Beeb handy? I need to replace one in my Superbrain and I think they are the same type. Black, square bodied, with clips on two opposite sides. I think they are "SMK linear type 4"

Cheers
JonB

Any chance of a piccie Jon?
Especially the angle of the plunger. some are vertical and some are a bit angled.

Straight stem like these

I'm not actually sure it's the right one. It's for a Superbrain, and they supposedly use the same switch. I'll take the broken one out and see if it's got the SMC logo on the bottom. They look identical though.. but the one I linked to fits Cherry keycaps, but the Superbrain's caps are not compatible.

I should have some of those.
I won't be able to retrieve them for a couple of days but pm me your address and I will post them asap. .

Ok.
Switches retrieved.
I will post them in the morning when the post office re-opens. :D
Hope they are the right ones [-o<
One of the photos on that site you linked to seems (to my eyes) to show the solder tags in a different place :?

If so, I will see if I can transplant the plunger into the old switch's body.

It'll be fun...

Hi Lee

A precise fit!

Ex Beeb keyswitch in place

With the key cap clipped on, perfect alignment!

Even feels and sounds the same as the other keys. =D>

It's an odd numeric keypad, what with the comma there, but I suspect it's modelled on a data entry terminal where you enter big numbers with commas in a ledger, like "10,000.50" or some such. I'd personally rather see some operators there: - + - / * and the like, but that is one of the charms of dealing with these old dinosaurs. I could probably remap the cursor keys, because the arrows are also present on H J K and L, like an ADM 3A terminal (perfect for vi enthusiasts?), but I think I'd better get the thing working first!

So, a great big fat "thank you"! Now, where's the bill?

Don't some countries use comma for a decimal point?

But don't think likely they would have been a big market for SuperBrain? :?:

Anyway, :D =D> that you've got a fixed key.
